Books and bubbles--my favorite binge!

That might as well be me there sitting in that bathtub up to my you-know-what in fragrant froth.

When I need to unwind, I pour myself a glass of white wine, grab a good book, uncap some richly scented foam bath, and hop in my (fiberglass) tub and read...until the water turns cold.

Sometimes I'll even burn a scented candle, too, completely oblivious to whether the scent of the bubble bath and the scent of the candle are competing. The more scents, the better, as I see it.

I work full time. I am a wife and a mother. I write in my spare time. Occasionally, my husband expects a cooked meal, a home that's picked up some, and a sparking clean toilet. Because of all these responsibilities that I've juggled for decades, I think that old advertising slogan "Calgon, take me away," could have been written by me or at the very least performed by me con gusto.

I don't know what it is about the bathtub that I love SO much. Some people have to have their showers, and I do too, if I'm in a hurry. (And some people don't like baths whatsoever.) But when I want to pamper myself, I always opt for a bath.

When my daughter was little, I loved giving her a bath. Every second was sheer delight. Playing with her floating toys, mounding bubbles on her belly and her back. Giving her a silly shampoo hair style. By the time I lifted her out of the tub her fingertips had shriveled to pink prunes and her body was as slick as a baby seal's. Then I'd wrap her up in a soft towel, pat her dry, change her into her pajamas, and we'd read books together on the rocking chair until it was time to put her down for bed.

Our little bath time and bedtime ritual was one of the best parts about being a mommy.

Once my daughter got too big for floating tub toys and shampoo styles, I think that's when I began enjoying my own indulgent bathtub ritual--my unplugged and unhurried me time.

And what about you? What do you enjoy doing to relax?

Hi, Susan! Do you know people who just don't like them whatsoever? Gotta have that shower? Well, I take a shower when I have no time to relax. Thanks for stopping.
